The four Horsemen and the human justice(Now You See Me: Now You Don’t)

Hey you!

Last wendnesday, I decided to go the movies. I was eager for some time by myself, and even though there are no good options to watch lately, I decided to give this movie a chance, since I did watch the last ones and they were fine.

I was not expecting much, to be honest, the story is not that good or profound, but I like Woody Harrelson and Morgan Freeman, so why not?

I knew the film was more for the purpose of entertaiment and nothing else, but surprisingly, I found a lot hidden narratives, that seems harmless, if you are not paying attention. But I was.

Actually, I always whatch movies with this critical thinking mindset, trying to read between the lines, the message behing the message. And boy, this movie was a field day.

So I want to share some ironies, reflections and contradictions behind the message of “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” (Spoiler alert!)

-the fallacy of the equal distribution of wealth or the “Robin Hood syndrome”: Sure, if we take away from the rich and distribute “equallly” to everybody, the problens of the world is solved.

The whole story is based on that: The “explored” poor against the greedy rich people, and human justice, since this new group (or future Four Horsemen) consider themselves “vigilantes.”

Right in the first scenes, this new group, through an illusionist show, deceives a rich man and steals a large amount of cryptocurrency from him to distribute among their audience, because his business is crooked (they also keep a portion, of course).

If you think that “giving for free” a lot of money to people will solve their problem, think again. I am not saying I am against helping the poor, but this kind of assistance should be temporary. People need opportunities to work and grow, not free money. Earning their money in a honest and hard way, this is how people’s character are forged. Free money = spoilled and unprepared people whining about everything.

-The old narrative that creates oppositon between 2 groups of people: The white people against the black, the rich againt the poor, men occupying spaces that should “have “belong” to women.

Surprise, surprise!

All the movie critics are based in this marxist mindset “opressed x opressor”: A white rich woman is exploring the poors. The women is the movie complain that they don’t have much space in the “magician field”, even though both of the women complaining are part od the team, and one of them were very succesfull before decididng to leave her carrer.

That takes me to the third point:

– the main female character, even though very successful and professionaly satisfied, abandons everything to get married and have children!

Oh, the feminists watching this movie must had had a great time! The narrative that women needs a great carrer to feel satisfied, that they don’t have equal opportunities, that marriage is opression yada yada yada is torn down. The female magician, even though very successful in her career, decides to abandon the Four Horsemen to be a housewife. What a terrible destiny.

-In the middle of it all, there is still space for the old and classical romance!

Although, the whole narrative is very progressive, ironically, the story still have space for the old fashioned romance, between a woman and a man. In the end, all that people want to see is a love happy ending.

-Magic tricks(illusionism) are nothing more than smoke screeens:

Like in many subjects in life, while we are paying attention to something else, designed to distract us, the real action happens outside the scope of our vision! If we think about social media and how algorithms works to keep our attention, this principle is applied constantly!

-The failure of human justice (inspired from God’s Justice in the book of Revelation- The four horsemen):

The eager of mankind to make justice with their own hands is a desire we all carry on! Since the beggining, despite the purposes of entertaiment through ilusion, the purpose of the group is to make justice by themselves. Unfortunatelly, the results , if you think it through, are very limited and always benefits themselves.

The lesson is very clear to me: Even with the best intentions in mind, we are not capable to fix the worlds problens. Even further, when we have the meanings and the power to do something good for others, most of the times, our personal interests will be in the way.

History shows it, over and over again, that every time people made a “revolution” to turn down kingdoms, goverments and systems, they came after that with something worse,even more authoritarian. The opressed is just the next opressor, waiting for an opportunity. Sad but true.

However, not everything is bad news! There are some positives outcomes in the movie. One of my favorites is the generational conflict:

The movie explores with humor the shock between two different generations: Their language, preferences, their problem solving approach, arrogance(from the younger), resistance(from the older),working through the challenges. But in the end, their strengths and weakness operates well together.

People’s differences is what makes us great together, we can learn from each other. The sense that, when we work as a team we go further than working alone. The differents point of view complement each other, helping them to achieve their goals.

Well, those are my reflections about “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t“.

Os Quatro Cavaleiros e a Justiça Humana (Truque de Mestre 3)

Oi, querido leitor!

Na última quarta-feira, eu decidi ir ao cinema. Estava com vontade de passar um tempo sozinha e, embora não haja muitas boas opções para assistir ultimamente, resolvi dar uma chance a este filme, já que assisti aos últimos e gostei.

Para ser sincera, não esperava muito. A história não é lá essas coisas, nem profunda nem nada, mas eu gosto do Woody Harrelson e do Morgan Freeman, então por que não?

Eu sabia que o filme era mais para entretenimento do que qualquer outra coisa, mas, surpreendentemente, encontrei várias mensagens sorrateiras que parecem inofensivas se você não estiver prestando atenção. Ah , mas eu estava.

Na verdade, eu sempre assisto a filmes com essa mentalidade crítica, tentando ler nas entrelinhas, ler a mensagem por trás da mensagem. E, olha, este filme foi um prato cheio.

Então, quero compartilhar algumas ironias, reflexões e contradições por trás da mensagem de ” Um Truque de Mestre 3 ” (Alerta de spoiler!).

• A falácia da distribuição igualitária de riqueza ou a “síndrome de Robin Hood”: Claro, se tirarmos dos ricos e distribuirmos “igualmente” para todos, os problemas do mundo estarão resolvidos.

Toda a história se baseia nisso: os pobres “explorados” contra os ricos gananciosos, e a justiça humana, uma vez que nova turma (ou futuros Cavaleiros do Apocalipse) se acham “justiceiros”.

Logo nas primeiras cenas, esse novo grupo, através de um show de ilusionismo, enganam um homem rico e roubam dele uma grande quantidade de criptomoedas para distribuir entre seu público, pelo simples fato de que o negócio dele é desonesto (eles também ficam com uma parte, é claro).

Se você acha que “dar de graça” muito dinheiro para as pessoas resolverá seus problemas, pense de novo. E uma desonestidade não justifica a próxima, senão aonde iríamos parar?(Bom, o Brasil conta…)

Não estou dizendo que sou contra ajudar os pobres, mas esse tipo de assistência deve ser temporária.

As pessoas precisam de oportunidades para trabalhar e crescer, não de dinheiro de graça ou assistencialismo eterno. Ganhar dinheiro honestamente e com esforço é como o caráter das pessoas é forjado.

Dinheiro fácil = pessoas mimadas e despreparadas que reclamam de tudo.

Outro ponto: A velha narrativa que cria oposição entre dois grupos de pessoas: brancos contra negros, ricos contra pobres, homens ocupando espaços que deveriam “pertencer” às mulheres.

Surpresa, surpresa!

Todos as críticos do filme se baseiam nessa mentalidade marxista de “oprimido x opressor”: Uma mulher branca rica que explora os pobres. As mulheres do filme reclamam que não têm muito espaço no “campo da mágica”,dominado por homens. Mesmo que, ambas as mulheres que reclamam façam parte da equipe, e uma delas tenha sido muito bem-sucedida antes de decidir abandonar a carreira.

Isso me leva ao terceiro ponto:

• A personagem feminina principal, mesmo sendo muito bem-sucedida e profissionalmente realizada, abandona tudo para se casar e ter filhos!

Ah, as feministas que assistiram a este filme devem ter se divertido muito! A narrativa de que as mulheres precisam de uma carreira de sucesso para se sentirem realizadas, que não têm oportunidades iguais, porque o casamento é opressão e blá blá blá, é desmantelada. A persogem feminina principal, mostra que, apesar de muito bem-sucedida em sua carreira, anseia por outro tipo de realização. Ela decide abandonar os Quatro Cavaleiros para se tornar dona de casa e mãe. Que destino terrível!

• Em meio a tudo isso, ainda há espaço para o romance clássico!

Embora toda a narrativa seja muito progressista, ironicamente, a história ainda reserva espaço para o romance à moda antiga entre um homem e uma mulher. No final, tudo o que as pessoas querem ver é um final feliz romântico.

-Truques de mágica (ilusionismo) nada mais são do que cortinas de fumaça:

Assim como na maioria dos assuntos importantes da vida, enquanto estamos prestando atenção em algo que tenta nos distrair, a verdadeira ação acontece fora do nosso campo de visão! Se pensarmos nas redes sociais e em como os algoritmos funcionam para manter nossa atenção, esse princípio se aplica a tudo!

• A falha da justiça humana (inspirada na Justiça de Deus no livro do Apocalipse – Os Quatro Cavaleiros):

O desejo da humanidade de fazer justiça com as próprias mãos é um anseio que todos compartilhamos! Desde o início, apesar do propósito de entretenimento através da magica, o objetivo do grupo era fazer justiça por conta própria. Infelizmente, os resultados, se analisarmos bem, são muito limitados e sempre os beneficiam.

A lição é muito clara para mim: mesmo com as melhores intenções, não somos capazes de resolver os problemas do mundo. E mais, na maioria das vezes, mesmo tendo os meios para fazer algo bom ou poderoso, nossos interesses pessoais acabam entrando no caminho.

A história mostra repetidamente que, sempre que um povo fez “revolução” para derrubar reinos, governos e sistemas, algo pior e mais autoritário surgiu em seguida. O oprimido é apenas o próximo opressor, à espera de uma oportunidade.

No entanto, nem tudo são más notícias! Há alguns pontos positivos no filme. Um dos meus favoritos é o conflito geracional:

O filme explora com humor o choque entre duas gerações diferentes: Sua linguagem, preferências, abordagens na resoulção de problemas, arrogância (dos mais jovens), resistência (dos mais velhos), a superação dos desafios. Mas, no final, suas forças e fraquezas se complementam.

As diferenças entre as pessoas são o que nos torna fortes juntos; podemos aprender uns com os outros. A sensação de que, quando trabalhamos em equipe, vamos mais longe do que trabalhando sozinhos. Os diferentes pontos de vista se complementam, ajudando-nos a alcançar objetivos comuns.
